My psychological orientation is influenced by humanistic, psychodynamic, relational and developmental schools of psychology as well as by eastern philosophy. I describe my work as person-centered, process-oriented, positive and strengths-based.

The humanists believe the direction of therapy is best led by the desires and concerns of you, the client. This approach acknowledges that it is the client’s wisdom that is of foremost importance to listen to and cultivate.

A Developmental approach means life can be considered as a series of developmental stages. At each age, we are undertaking, learning and completing certain tasks; whether this is feeding, learning to walk, talk, do things, acknowledge differences from our parents, becoming more independent, developing an intimate relationship with a partner, or accepting death. Seeing ourselves in the framework of developmental stages can be helpful. We can identify at what stage we may currently be in, and can also identify at what age or stage we may have experienced a “wounding”; whether a trauma, an event or relationship dynamic. We can then stay curious about how that experience may have impacted our psychological and emotional development. In therapy, we can then work to heal the wound and meet the developmental need.

In Psychodynamic understanding, we bring awareness to the inner workings of the psyche (mind), and look at relationships with primary family members. We may bring awareness to how your personality and character developed in relationship to your family and childhood, to better find solutions to current problems and relationship conflicts.

A Relational approach involves paying attention to what is directly happening in the relationship of therapist and client, you and I. What kinds of feelings are arising toward one another? What kinds of dynamics are being played out that when brought into greater awareness, can uncover patterns in your other relationships. The honesty and integrity of our therapeutic relationship is key.

Eastern philosophy includes practices that cultivate mindfulness, presence, and the development of unconditional compassion for ourselves and others. Reconnecting with the heart, and balancing awareness of body, mind and feelings are key aspects of my approach to therapy.
