Dance-Movement Therapy (DMT) For Adults

Dance-Movement Therapy (DMT) is for both men and women, and can include talking, breathing, learning to sense one’s body, moving more fully through space, as well as activities that help you to expand self-expression by practicing new ways of moving and being.

DMT can include aspects of physical movement coaching, for example, such as supporting body alignment to help you feel more confident or connected to yourself, or breathing techniques to help alleviate anxiety. DMT often includes the therapist’s gentle encouragement for you to engage awareness of your body and breath to help make contact with and allow safe expression of difficult feelings.

Benefits:

  • Access greater self-expression and choice in relationship.
  • Increased assertiveness and boundaries.
  • Ability to let go of judgment about your body.
  • Confidence and feeling of wholeness experienced at a physical level, decreasing self-doubt and anxiety.
  • More direct access to parts of yourself buried, disowned, repressed, and in conflict with what you truly want; bringing what needs healing to the surface.
  • Increased self-understanding and self-love.

Body awareness is what ultimately allows you to know yourself. How do we know what we feel? The sensations of our body tell us through tension in our muscles, feelings in our belly or chest. Growing awareness of the sensations and feeling tone in your body enables you to recognize and meet your emotional and physical needs faster. Expanding your range of movement potential and self-expression allows you to take action in the world, to build more intimate and honest relationships, and most importantly to connect to yourself truthfully.

Allowing your body to move as it was designed to move, while maintaining awareness of your body and thoughts, encourages safe and controlled expression of feelings. Having body movement resources “at your fingertips” helps you to express the passion of being alive, here and now.

In Dance-Movement Therapy, movement is useful both literally (becoming aware of how your body wants to move and giving yourself permission to move) and also as a metaphor for looking at life. What is moving through us? What part of us wants to move and live more fully, what part wants to let go, rest, die? How do we need to move, yearn to move? Is it reaching out that we are afraid of in life, or taking hold of something we finally have in our hands? Is it stepping forward or backwards that would best serve us in this moment? When we begin to “listen” to the sensation, feelings and movement impulse of our bodies, we find answers and innate wisdom.
